Understanding Dysautonomia: When One Nervous System Problem Creates Many Different Symptoms

One child struggles with constipation. Another has anxiety. Another can't sleep. Another has constant headaches. Another becomes overwhelmed by noise and crowds. At first glance, these all seem like completely different problems. But what if they were actually different expressions of the same problem?"

At House of Chiropractic, this is something we see every week. Parents often arrive believing they're dealing with five different problems in one child or family member, when in reality, there's often a common thread connecting them all.


"Why Haven't I Heard of Dysautonomia Before?" 

One of the reasons dysautonomia is so often missed is, or talked about, because it doesn't look the same from one person to the next. In fact, many children and adults with dysautonomia look perfectly healthy on the outside and conventional testing results typically all come back clear. That's why it's often referred to as an "invisible illness."


Dysautonomia affects an estimated 70 million people worldwide but often goes unrecognised because it doesn't fit neatly into one medical specialty. One child sees a gastroenterologist. Another sees an ENT. Another sees a psychologist. Another sees a paediatrician. Another sees an OT. Each practitioner is doing exactly what they've been trained to do, looking closely at ONE body system or symptom. But when no one steps back at the big picture, to look at how the nervous system is coordinating all of those systems together, an important piece of the puzzle can be missed.


To fully understand the complexities of dysautonomia, it’s important to first understand the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and its critical role in nervous system regulation and maintaining overall health and well-being. That's because dysautonomia isn't focused on just one organ or body system. It's about how the autonomic nervous system is coordinating THEM ALL. Most people think the autonomic nervous system only controls heart rate and blood pressure. In reality, it's responsible for so much more. Every second of every day it's helping regulate digestion, immunity, inflammation, sensory processing, movement, behaviour, emotions, speech and gut function.


One of the easiest ways to understand dysautonomia is to imagine driving a car. Your autonomic nervous system has two main gears. The first is your sympathetic nervous system, your accelerator. It prepares you to deal with stress (and protection) by increasing your heart rate, sharpening your focus and getting your body ready for action. The second is your parasympathetic nervous system, your brake. This is your "rest, digest and heal" mode. It's the system that helps you sleep deeply, digest your food, regulate inflammation, regulate your hormonal system and recover after a busy day. Imagine driving your car everywhere with one foot permanently on the accelerator. The engine works harder. It burns more fuel. Parts wear out faster. Eventually, things don't perform the way they should. The body is remarkably similar.


When the nervous system can't shift out of stress and protection mode, every system has to work harder just to keep up. One of the reasons dysautonomia can feel so overwhelming is that it rarely affects just one part of the body. Because the autonomic nervous system helps regulate so many functions, symptoms often appear in multiple body systems at the same time.


Where Does the Vagus Nerve Come into Dysautonomia? 

One of the biggest players in all of this is the vagus nerve. The  vagus nerve is a cranial nerve and is one of the key regulators of the parasympathetic nervous system. It's the longest cranial nerve in the body, travelling from the brainstem down through the neck and into the heart, lungs, digestive system and in fact potentially, emerging research suggests, all major systems in the body. Think of the vagus nerve as one of the body's greatest communicators. Around 75-80% of the fibres within the vagus nerve carry information from the body back to the brain (sensory input), constantly updating the brain on what's happening throughout the body. This is one of the reasons the upper neck and brainstem are so important. It's here that an enormous amount of communication is being coordinated before the brain decides how the rest of the body should respond. It’s a key integration point.


When the vagus nerve is working well, it helps slow the heart, support digestion, calm inflammation, improve sleep and help us recover from stress. When our nervous system becomes overwhelmed by stress, the balance begins to shift. Instead of spending enough time in its "rest, digest and heal" state, it starts living in "fight-or-flight." Over time, this constant state of survival can affect almost every system in the body. Now, what this looks like in kids can be multifactorial: heightened anxiety, worry, panic, frequent emotional meltdowns or outbursts. It can look like disrupted sleep, nightmares. It can look like lack of appetite. It can affect every single system


When the vagus nerve isn't communicating efficiently, the effects can be felt rippling throughout the entire body. That's one of the reasons dysautonomia can appear so confusing, many seemingly unrelated symptoms may actually be connected by the same underlying nervous system problem.

Why is Dysautonomia Showing up so Prolifically? 

Unfortunately, for the past couple of generations, we’ve allowed chronic stress, anxiety, and toxicity to invade our culture like never before. Our families are being exposed to unrelenting levels of stress and tension, along with a daily barrage of chemicals and environmental stressors from our food, air, water, household products, medications, and many other sources.


We also know that a baby's nervous system begins being shaped long before birth. Chronic stress before and during pregnancy can influence a baby’s, toddler’s and child's ability to regulate stress and adapt throughout life. Maternal stress hormones, such as cortisol, are able to cross the placenta, impacting the developing brain and nervous system during this critical period. Birth interventions such as forceps, vacuum assistance, prolonged labour, induction or caesarean birth can place additional mechanical stress on the delicate brainstem and upper neck. In some babies, this may influence vagal function and the way the autonomic nervous system develops and adapts in early life.


It’s becoming clear that one of the most overlooked aspects of chronic health challenges in kids is dysautonomia. And in turn, one of the most commonly overlooked and easily missed contributors to this neurological storm is stress placed on the developing nervous system during pregnancy, birth and early childhood.
