UNDERSTANDING SCIATICA

Sciatica isn’t actually a diagnosis—it’s a description. It simply means you have pain in your thigh or leg, but it doesn’t explain what’s causing it.
The term comes from the sciatic nerve, the largest and longest nerve in your body, which travels from your lower back, through the piriformis muscle in your buttocks, and down the back of your thigh, leg, and into your foot.
Because of the nerve’s complex path, symptoms can vary widely depending on where irritation or pressure occurs.
At House of Chiropractic, our goal is to identify the true cause of your irritation and provide lasting sciatica relief—naturally.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF SCIATICA
Sciatica symptoms can come on suddenly or develop gradually over time. You might experience:
-
Pins and needles in your leg or foot
-
Sharp or stabbing pain down the thigh or leg
-
Buttock pain that may or may not radiate down the leg
-
Burning or shooting pain through one or both legs
-
Pulling or grabbing sensations in the buttocks or leg

WHAT CAUSES SCIATICA?

There are several possible causes, though the most common we see is spinal misalignment. When spinal bones shift out of position, they can irritate the nerves as they exit the spine, causing leg or hip pain.
Other possible causes include:
-
Disc injuries
-
Degenerative joint disease
-
Spinal canal stenosis
-
Spondylolisthesis
-
Piriformis syndrome
-
Sacroiliac joint problems
Because the sciatic nerve begins in the lower back, pain in your hip, leg, or knee often starts there too.
