SCOLIOSIS

Fotolia_145424536_XS.jpg

Remember the days when you would bend over in front of the nurse at school, [lift your tops up] and they would check everyone for scoliosis? Well, that doesn’t happen anymore.

NONE OF OUR KIDS GET CHECKED FOR SCOLIOSIS AT SCHOOL. NONE.

At least none of the schools that I have seen in Albury Wodonga.

So, how do we know if our Albury Kids have scoliosis?

You don’t. The only way to know is to have them checked. Unfortunately, we are now reaping what we have sowed…

  • Children have almost finishing developing when their scoliosis is detected making it incredibly difficult, sometimes impossible to correct

  • Children are being mis-diagnosed when they see health professionals who don't assess for scoliosis when, quite often the primary problem is scoliosis

  • Scoliosis is going undetected into late teens or adulthood leading to an array of disability, discomfort and displeasure

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine where it is curved when looking from behind when it should be straight.

Sometimes patients are obviously deformed, sometimes it is more subtle.

Tragically, it is never obvious when the deformity is beginning even though this is the time when it may be possible to fix

What Causes Scoliosis?

  • Congenital (from birth)

  • Neuromuscular

  • Paralytic

  • A Short Leg (it’s an early indicator, but not 100%)

  • Lifestyle (School Bags?)

  • Genetics

** 85% of all scoliosis are AID – Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

(Meaning the scoliosis begins growing as a child for no apparent reason) **

 A Simple Scoliosis Screening..

It’s super important to regularly check your child without their top on.

Standing from behind look at your child

     Do their shoulders look uneven

Does one shoulder blade stick out more than the other

Do their hips or waist look uneven

Is there a noticeable curve in their back

As they bend partially forward is there an obvious hump on one side of their ribcage

As they bend fully forward is there a bump on one side of their lower back

Is there a family history of scoliosis

     Is your child female

If you tick two of more of these signs above you need to see a

practitioner that can assess you properly for scoliosis.

At House of Chiropractic we assess every child that comes in for scoliosis

Scoliosis Treatment

Every scoliosis is different. Different cause. Different shape. Different measurement.

The solution to a childs’s scoliosis is different to an adult scoliosis and is dependent on numerous factors.

House of Chiropractic can help depending on the degree and type of curve.

We develop programs with our patients that include Chiropractic care, functional exercises, ScoliRoll tractioning and if necessary a heel lift.

If we are unsure if we can help you with your scoliosis treatment we will refer you for a second opinion or for potential bracing.
